Al-Layl

The Night

1 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 001

By the night when it covers[1],
[1] Everything between sky and earth with its darkness.

2 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 002

and by the day when it appears,

3 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 003

and by His creation of male and female,

4 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 004

surely your efforts are divergent.

5 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 005

As for the one who gives in charity and fears Allah,

6 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 006

and truly believes in the best reward,

7 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 007

We will make easy for him the way of salvation.

8 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 008

But as for the one who is miserly and deems himself self-sufficient,

9 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 009

and denies the best reward,

10 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 010

We will make easy for him the way of perdition.

11 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 011

His wealth will be of no avail to him when he tumbles [into Hell].

12 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 012

Indeed, it is upon Us to show the right way,

13 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 013

and surely to Us belong the Hereafter and the present life.

14 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 014

So I warn you of a raging Fire,

15 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 015

none will enter it except the most wretched,

16 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 016

who denied and turned away.

17 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 017

But the most righteous will be saved from it,

18 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 018

who spends his wealth to purify himself,

19 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 019

not in return for someone’s favors[2],
[2] i.e., not as a repayment for a favor he received.

20 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 020

but to seek the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High.

21 - Al-Layl (The Night) - 021

He will surely be well pleased.
