About the momentous news[1],
[1] i.e., the Resurrection.
3 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 003
that which they differ about[2].
[2] The pagans of Makkah denied the Qur’an, resurrection, and judgment. They differed as to whether the Qur’an was magic, fortune-telling, or poetry.
4 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 004
No indeed; they will come to know.
5 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 005
Again no; they will come to know.
6 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 006
Have We not made the earth a resting place?
7 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 007
And the mountains as stakes[3],
[3] Mountains go deep below the surface like pegs and icebergs, stabilizing the earth and slowing tectonic movement.
8 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 008
and created you in pairs,
9 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 009
and made your sleep for rest,
10 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 010
and made the night a covering[4],
[4] Covering you in its darkness as garments cover you.
11 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 011
and made the day for seeking a livelihood,
12 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 012
and built above you seven mighty heavens,
13 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 013
and made therein a blazing lamp,
14 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 014
and sent down from the rainclouds abundant water,
15 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 015
so that We may produce thereby grains and vegetation,
16 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 016
and gardens with dense foliage?
17 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 017
Indeed, the Day of Judgment is a time appointed,
18 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 018
the Day when the Trumpet will be blown, you will come forth in crowds,
19 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 019
and the sky will be opened up and will become gateways,
20 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 020
and the mountains will vanish, becoming like a mirage.
21 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 021
Indeed, Hell is lying in wait,
22 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 022
a resort for the transgressors,
23 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 023
wherein they will abide for endless ages.
24 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 024

25 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 025
except for scalding water and discharge of wounds,

a fitting recompense[5].
[5] To their disbelief and evil deeds.
27 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 027
Indeed, they did not expect a reckoning,
28 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 028
and utterly rejected Our verses.
29 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 029
But We have enumerated everything in a record[6].
[6] i.e., a record of deeds.
30 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 030
So taste [the punishment], for We will not increase you except in torment[7].”
[7] The addressees are the dwellers of Hell.
31 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 031

and a full cup [of wine][9].

35 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 035
They will not hear therein vain talk or lies –
36 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 036
a reward and a generous gift from your Lord[10],
[10] Or "a gift adequately calculated"; as a result of their righteous deeds as well as the ample generosity of Allah.
37 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 037
[from] the Lord of the heavens and earth and all that is between them, the Most Compassionate; none will dare to speak to Him[11].
[11] None can ask or plead on the Day of Judgment except by Allah's permission.
38 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 038

39 - An-Naba (The Tidings) - 039
That Day is sure to come. So whoever wills may seek a path leading to his Lord[12].
[12] i.e., the path of guidance and righteous deeds.
