The Winnowing Winds
1 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 001
By the winds that scatter [dust],
2 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 002
and by the clouds carrying loads of water,
3 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 003
and by the ships that sail with ease,
4 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 004
and by the angels who distribute [blessings] by His command.
5 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 005
Indeed, what you are promised is true,
6 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 006
and the Judgment will surely come to pass.
7 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 007
By the heaven with its pathways[1],
[1] i.e., tracks or orbits.
8 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 008
Indeed, you [Makkans] have conflicting views[2].
[2] Concerning the Prophet (ﷺ) and the Qur’an.
9 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 009
He who is diverted from it is destined to be diverted.
10 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 010
Doomed[3] are those who base their beliefs on conjecture.
[3] May they be destroyed.
11 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 011
those who are steeped in ignorance heedlessly.
12 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 012
They ask [mockingly], “When is the Day of Judgment?”
13 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 013
It is the Day when they will be punished by the Fire.
14 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 014
[It will be said], “Taste your punishment! This is what you were seeking to hasten.”
15 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 015
Indeed, the righteous will be in gardens and springs,
16 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 016
receiving what their Lord will give them, for they were indeed doers of good beforehand.
17 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 017
They used to sleep only a little at night[4],
[4] i.e., spending most of the night in prayer, reciting the Qur’an, and in supplication.
18 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 018
and before dawn they would seek forgiveness[5],
[5] Supererogatory prayers and supplications are recommended before dawn.
19 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 019
and in their wealth, there was a share for the beggar and the destitute.
20 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 020
On earth there are signs for those who are certain in faith,
21 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 021
and also within yourselves. Do you not see?
22 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 022
And in the heaven is your provision and all that you are promised.
23 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 023
By the Lord of the heaven and earth, this [resurrection] is certainly as true as the fact that you can speak.
24 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 024
Has there come to you the story of Abraham’s honored guests[6]?
[6] Honorable angels with Allah.
25 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 025
When they came to him and said, “Peace.” He said, “Upon you be peace.” [saying to himself] “Unknown people!”
26 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 026
Then he went quickly to his household, and came with a fat [roasted] calf,
27 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 027
and placed it before them and said, “Will you not eat?”
28 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 028
He felt apprehensive about them[7]. They said, “Do not be afraid,” and gave him glad tidings of a knowledgeable son.
[7] In their culture, if a guest refused to eat the food provided, it was considered a sign of ill will. See footnote 11:70.
29 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 029
His wife cried out loud, and struck her face [in astonishment] and said, “[I am] a barren old woman!”
30 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 030
They said, “This is what your Lord said. Indeed, He is the All-Wise, the All-Knowing.”
31 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 031
Abraham said, “Then what is your mission, O messengers?”
32 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 032
They said, “We have been sent to a wicked people,
33 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 033
to send down upon them stones of clay,
34 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 034
marked by your Lord for the transgressors.”
35 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 035
We brought out those believers who were there,
36 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 036
but We only found in it one Muslim household[8].
[8] Lot's family except his wife.
37 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 037
And We left there a sign[9] for those who fear the painful punishment.
[9] i.e., the ruins of Sodom or the Dead Sea in Palestine, as a lesson for people.
38 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 038
And [there is a sign in the story of] Moses when We sent him to Pharaoh with compelling proofs,
39 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 039
But he and his supporters turned away, and he said about [Moses], “A magician or a madman!”
40 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 040
So We seized him and his soldiers and cast them into the sea while he was blameworthy[10].
[10] For his disbelief and arrogance.
41 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 041
And [there is a sign in the story of] ‘Ād, when We sent against them the devastating barren wind[11].
[11] Devoid of all goodness such as carrying rain or fertilizing trees.
42 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 042
It spared nothing it came upon except that it reduced it to ruin and decay.
43 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 043
And [there is a sign in the story of] Thamūd, when they were told, “Enjoy yourselves for a while[12].”
[12] i.e., only three days. See 11:65.
44 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 044
But they rebelled against the command of their Lord, so the thunderbolt seized them, while they were looking on.
45 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 045
They could not withstand it, nor could they ward it off.
46 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 046
And the people of Noah [were also destroyed] before them. They were indeed a rebellious people.
47 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 047
We built the heaven with might[13], and We are indeed expanding it.
[13] ’Ayd does not mean "hands" here. This is not from the verses of Allah's attributes, for Allah Almighty did not add it to Himself, i.e., He did not say, "My ’ayd, or Our ’ayd".
48 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 048
And We spread out the earth. How well did We smooth it out[14]!
[14] The earth was spread out to accommodate the creatures. Its spherical shape is mentioned in 39:5.
49 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 049
And We have created everything in pairs[15], so that you may take heed.
[15] Such as day and night, male and female, light and darkness, sweet and bitter, hot and cold, etc.
50 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 050
So flee to Allah[16]. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.
[16] From His punishment to His reward by shunning disbelief and sin and by obeying Him.
51 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 051
And do not set up another god with Allah. Indeed, I am a clear warner to you from Him.”
52 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 052
Likewise, no messenger came to those before them without being told: “A magician, or a madman!”
53 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 053
Did they suggest this to one another[17]? Rather they are transgressing people.
[17] i.e., Did the previous disbelievers pass on these false allegations to the pagans of Makkah so they repeat their words?
54 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 054
So turn away from them [O Prophet], for you are not to blame[18].
[18] After you have delivered the message.
55 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 055
But keep reminding them, for reminder benefits the believers.
56 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 056
I have not created the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
57 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 057
I seek no provision from them, nor do I want them to feed Me.
58 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 058
Indeed, it is Allah Who is the All-Provider[19], Lord of Power, the Mighty.
[19] He Provides His creatures with everything they need. Among His provisions is guidance.
59 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 059
Indeed, those who do wrong will have a share [of punishment] like that of their predecessors, so let them not ask Me to hasten it.
60 - Adh-Dhariyat (The Winnowing Winds) - 060
