The Poets

1 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 001

Tā sīn mīm.[1]
[1] See footnote 2:1.

2 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 002

These are the verses of the clear Book.

3 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 003

Perhaps you[2] will grieve yourself to death because they do not believe.
[2] O Muhammad.

4 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 004

If We willed, We could send down upon them a sign from the heaven, at which their necks would stay bowed in humility[3].
[3] i.e., they would be compelled to believe, being humbled.

5 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 005

No new reminder comes to them from the Most Compassionate except that they turn away from it.

6 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 006

They have rejected [the Truth], soon there will come to them the consequences of their ridicule.

7 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 007

Do they not see the earth, how many fine kinds of plants We grow in it?

8 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 008

Indeed, there is a sign in this, yet most of them will not believe.

9 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 009

Your Lord is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

10 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 010

And [remember] when your Lord called out to Moses, “Go to the wrongdoing people –

11 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 011

the people of Pharaoh; will they not fear [the punishment of] Allah?”

12 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 012

He said, “My Lord, I fear that they may reject me,

13 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 013

and I will feel distressed and my tongue will not be fluent, so send Aaron along [to help me].

14 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 014

Moreover, they have a charge against me, so I fear they may kill me[4].”
[4] For killing a Coptic Egyptian by mistake before becoming a prophet.

15 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 015

Allah said, “Certainly not! Go, both of you, with Our signs[5]; We are with you, listening.
[5] i.e., the miracles of the staff and the shining hand, given to Moses.

16 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 016

Go to Pharaoh and say, ‘We are the messengers[6] from the Lord of the worlds,
[6] The singular form in Arabic denotes that they both were sent with a single message.

17 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 017

that you let the Children of Israel go with us.’”

18 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 018

Pharaoh said, “Did we not bring you up as a child among us, and you stayed with us several years of your life?

19 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 019

Yet you did what you did[7], and you are extremely ungrateful.”
[7] i.e., striking the Copt in support of a man from your people, who died as a result.

20 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 020

He said, “I did it when I had no guidance.

21 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 021

So I fled from you in fear. Then my Lord gave me wisdom and made me one of the messengers.

22 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 022

Is this a favor that you remind me with, that you have enslaved the Children of Israel?[8]
[8] i.e., If you had not been cruel to the Israelites, I should not have been brought to your house for upbringing.

23 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 023

Pharaoh said, “What is ‘the Lord of the worlds’?”

24 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 024

Moses said, “The Lord of the heavens and earth and all that is between them, if only you had sure faith.”

25 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 025

Pharaoh said to those around him, “Did you hear [what he just said]?”

26 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 026

Moses said, “Your Lord and the Lord of your forefathers.”

27 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 027

Pharaoh said, “Your messenger who has been sent to you is truly insane!”

28 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 028

Moses said, “Lord of the east and west and all that is between them, if only you had sense!”

29 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 029

Pharaoh said, “If you take any god other than me, I will throw you into prison.”

30 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 030

Moses said, “What if I bring you a clear proof?”

31 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 031

Pharaoh said, “Bring it then if you are truthful!”

32 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 032

So he threw down his staff, and suddenly it was a real serpent.

33 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 033

And he drew out his hand, and it was glowing white to the beholders.

34 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 034

Pharaoh said to the chiefs around him, “This is indeed a learned magician!

35 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 035

He wants to drive you out of your land with his magic. What do you suggest?”

36 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 036

They said, “Let him and his brother wait and dispatch heralds to the cities

37 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 037

to bring you every learned magician.”

38 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 038

So the magicians were assembled at an appointed time on a known day[9].
[9] i.e., the morning of the festival day. See 20:58-59.

39 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 039

And it was said to the people, “Will you join the gathering,

40 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 040

so that we may follow the magicians, if they are victorious?”

41 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 041

When the magicians came, they said to Pharaoh, “Will there be a reward for us if we are victorious?”

42 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 042

He said, “Yes, and then you will surely be of those who are close to me.”

43 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 043

Moses said to them, “Throw whatever you wish to throw.”

44 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 044

So they threw their ropes and staffs, and said, “By the glory of Pharaoh, it is we who will be the victorious!”

45 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 045

Then Moses threw his staff, and at once it swallowed up all objects of their illusion.

46 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 046

So the magicians fell down in prostration.

47 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 047

They said, “We believe in the Lord of the worlds,

48 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 048

the Lord of Moses and Aaron.”

49 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 049

Pharaoh said, “How dare you believe in him before I give you permission. Indeed, he is your master who taught you magic, but you will soon come to know. I will surely cut off your hands and feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all.”

50 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 050

They said, “No harm; we will surely return to our Lord.

51 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 051

We hope that our Lord will forgive us our sins, as we are the first of the believers.”

52 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 052

We inspired Moses, “Leave with My slaves by night; you will surely be pursued.”

53 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 053

So Pharaoh sent heralds to the cities[10],
[10] In order to prevent the emigration of the Children of Israel.

54 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 054

saying, “These are but a small band,

55 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 055

and they have enraged us,

56 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 056

but we are all well-prepared.”

57 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 057

Thus did We drive them[11] out of their gardens and springs,
[11] i.e., Pharaoh and his people.

58 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 058

and their treasures and splendid dwellings.

59 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 059

So it was, and We made the Children of Israel to inherit them.

60 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 060

They pursued them at sunrise.

61 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 061

When the two groups saw each other, the companions of Moses said, “We are surely overtaken!”

62 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 062

Moses said, “Certainly not! My Lord is with me; He will guide me.”

63 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 063

Then We inspired Moses, “Strike the sea with your staff,” so it parted, and each part became like a huge mountain.

64 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 064

Then We brought the others [i.e., the pursuers] close to that place,

65 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 065

and We saved Moses and all those who were with him.

66 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 066

Then we drowned the others.

67 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 067

Indeed, there is a sign in this, yet most of them would not believe.

68 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 068

Indeed, your Lord is the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful.

69 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 069

Relate to them the story of Abraham,

70 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 070

when he said to his father and his people, “What do you worship?”

71 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 071

They said, “We worship idols and remain devoted to them.”

72 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 072

He said, “Do they hear you when you call upon them?

73 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 073

Or can they benefit or harm you?”

74 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 074

They said, “No, but this is what we found our forefathers doing.”

75 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 075

He said, “Do you see what you have been worshiping,

76 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 076

you and your ancestors?

77 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 077

Indeed, they are my enemies, except the Lord of the worlds[12],
[12] As they worshiped idols in addition to worshiping Allah.

78 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 078

Who created me, so He guides me;

79 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 079

and it is He Who provides me with food and drink;

80 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 080

and when I am ill He heals me;

81 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 081

and He will cause me to die and then bring me back to life;

82 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 082

and I hope that He will forgive me my sins on the Day of Judgment.”

83 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 083

“My Lord, grant me knowledge, and join me with the righteous,

84 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 084

and grant me an honorable mention among the later generations[13],
[13] Muslims invoke Allah’s blessings upon Abraham (ﷺ) along with Muhammad (ﷺ) in their daily prayers.

85 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 085

and make me of those who will inherit the Garden of Bliss;

86 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 086

and forgive my father, for he is one of those who have gone astray;

87 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 087

and do not disgrace me on the Day when all will be resurrected –

88 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 088

the Day when neither wealth nor children will be of any avail,

89 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 089

except the one who comes to Allah with a sound heart[14].”
[14] A heart free from disbelief, polytheism, hypocrisy, arrogance, and show-off.

90 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 090

Paradise will be brought near to the righteous,

91 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 091

and Hellfire will be uncovered to those who went astray,

92 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 092

and they will be told, “Where are those whom you used to worship

93 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 093

other than Allah? Can they help you or even help themselves?”

94 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 094

Then they will be hurled into Hell one upon another, along with those who led them astray,

95 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 095

and the followers of Iblīs, all together.

96 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 096

There the deviants will say while quarreling with their false deities,

97 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 097

“By Allah, we were clearly misguided,

98 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 098

when we deemed you equal to the Lord of the worlds.

99 - Ash-Shu'ara (The Poets) - 099
