Al-Waqi'ah
The Inevitable
1 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 001
إِذَا وَقَعَتِ ٱلۡوَاقِعَةُ
When the Inevitable Event comes to pass,
2 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 002
لَيۡسَ لِوَقۡعَتِهَا كَاذِبَةٌ
there will be none to deny its occurrence;
3 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 003
خَافِضَةٞ رَّافِعَةٌ
it will bring some low and raise others up[1].
[1] According to their deeds rather than wealth and social position, as is the case in this world. The righteous will be elevated in Paradise and the wicked will be debased in Hell.
4 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 004
إِذَا رُجَّتِ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ رَجّٗا
When the earth is shaken violently,
5 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 005
وَبُسَّتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ بَسّٗا
and the mountains crushed to pieces,
6 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 006
فَكَانَتۡ هَبَآءٗ مُّنۢبَثّٗا
and turn to scattered dust,
7 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 007
وَكُنتُمۡ أَزۡوَٰجٗا ثَلَٰثَةٗ
then you are sorted into three groups:
8 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 008
فَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَيۡمَنَةِ
the people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right[2]!
[2] i.e., those who receive their record of deeds in the right hand and are destined for Paradise.
9 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 009
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡمَشۡـَٔمَةِ
The people of the left – how miserable will be the people of the left[3]!
[3] i.e., those who receive their record of deeds in the left hand and are destined for Hell.
10 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 010
وَٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ ٱلسَّـٰبِقُونَ
And the forerunners [in faith] are the forerunners [in Paradise].
11 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 011
أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبُونَ
They are the nearest ones [to Allah],
12 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 012
فِي جَنَّـٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ
in Gardens of Bliss,
13 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 013
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
many from the early generations,
14 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 014
وَقَلِيلٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
and a few from the later generations.
15 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 015
عَلَىٰ سُرُرٖ مَّوۡضُونَةٖ
[They will be seated] on jeweled couches,
16 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 016
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ عَلَيۡهَا مُتَقَٰبِلِينَ
reclining on them, facing one another.
17 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 017
يَطُوفُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وِلۡدَٰنٞ مُّخَلَّدُونَ
They will be served by immortal youths
18 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 018
بِأَكۡوَابٖ وَأَبَارِيقَ وَكَأۡسٖ مِّن مَّعِينٖ
with cups, pitchers, and glasses [of wine] from a flowing spring,
19 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 019
لَّا يُصَدَّعُونَ عَنۡهَا وَلَا يُنزِفُونَ
which will neither cause any headache nor intoxication,
20 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 020
وَفَٰكِهَةٖ مِّمَّا يَتَخَيَّرُونَ
along with fruits of their choice,
21 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 021
وَلَحۡمِ طَيۡرٖ مِّمَّا يَشۡتَهُونَ
and flesh of birds that they may desire.
22 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 022
وَحُورٌ عِينٞ
And [they will have] maidens with wide gorgeous eyes,
23 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 023
كَأَمۡثَٰلِ ٱللُّؤۡلُوِٕ ٱلۡمَكۡنُونِ
like pristine pearls,
24 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 024
جَزَآءَۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ
as a reward for what they used to do.
25 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 025
لَا يَسۡمَعُونَ فِيهَا لَغۡوٗا وَلَا تَأۡثِيمًا
They will not hear therein any idle talk or sinful speech,
26 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 026
إِلَّا قِيلٗا سَلَٰمٗا سَلَٰمٗا
except the words of peace, peace[4].
[4] i.e., only exchanging greetings of peace.
27 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 027
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
The people of the right – how blessed will be the people of the right!
28 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 028
فِي سِدۡرٖ مَّخۡضُودٖ
[They will be] in the midst of thornless lote trees,
29 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 029
وَطَلۡحٖ مَّنضُودٖ
and clusters of bananas,
30 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 030
وَظِلّٖ مَّمۡدُودٖ
and extended shade,
31 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 031
وَمَآءٖ مَّسۡكُوبٖ
and flowing water,
32 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 032
وَفَٰكِهَةٖ كَثِيرَةٖ
and abundant fruit –
33 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 033
لَّا مَقۡطُوعَةٖ وَلَا مَمۡنُوعَةٖ
neither ceasing nor restricted –
34 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 034
وَفُرُشٖ مَّرۡفُوعَةٍ
and elevated mattresses [on beds].
35 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 035
إِنَّآ أَنشَأۡنَٰهُنَّ إِنشَآءٗ
Indeed, We have perfectly created them [i.e., their spouses],
36 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 036
فَجَعَلۡنَٰهُنَّ أَبۡكَارًا
and have made them virgins,
37 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 037
عُرُبًا أَتۡرَابٗا
loving and of equal age,
38 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 038
لِّأَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
for the people of the right,
39 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 039
ثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ
many from the earlier generations,
40 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 040
وَثُلَّةٞ مِّنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
and many from the later generations.
41 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 041
وَأَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ مَآ أَصۡحَٰبُ ٱلشِّمَالِ
And the people of the left – how wretched will be the people of the left!
42 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 042
فِي سَمُومٖ وَحَمِيمٖ
[They will be] in scorching wind and scalding water,
43 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 043
وَظِلّٖ مِّن يَحۡمُومٖ
in the shade of black smoke,
44 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 044
لَّا بَارِدٖ وَلَا كَرِيمٍ
neither cool nor refreshing.
45 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 045
إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُواْ قَبۡلَ ذَٰلِكَ مُتۡرَفِينَ
Indeed, they used to be in luxuries before,
46 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 046
وَكَانُواْ يُصِرُّونَ عَلَى ٱلۡحِنثِ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
and persisted in the gravest sin[5].
[5] i.e., Shirk (associating partners with Allah) or disbelief.
47 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 047
وَكَانُواْ يَقُولُونَ أَئِذَا مِتۡنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابٗا وَعِظَٰمًا أَءِنَّا لَمَبۡعُوثُونَ
They used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, will we really be raised again?
48 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 048
أَوَءَابَآؤُنَا ٱلۡأَوَّلُونَ
And our forefathers as well?”
49 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 049
قُلۡ إِنَّ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ وَٱلۡأٓخِرِينَ
Say, [O Prophet], “Indeed, the former and later generations
50 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 050
لَمَجۡمُوعُونَ إِلَىٰ مِيقَٰتِ يَوۡمٖ مَّعۡلُومٖ
will be gathered on a predetermined Day.
51 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 051
ثُمَّ إِنَّكُمۡ أَيُّهَا ٱلضَّآلُّونَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبُونَ
Then you, O misguided deniers,
52 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 052
لَأٓكِلُونَ مِن شَجَرٖ مِّن زَقُّومٖ
will surely eat from the tree of zaqqūm[6],

53 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 053
فَمَالِـُٔونَ مِنۡهَا ٱلۡبُطُونَ
filling your bellies with it,
54 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 054
فَشَٰرِبُونَ عَلَيۡهِ مِنَ ٱلۡحَمِيمِ
and drinking scalding water on top of it,
55 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 055
فَشَٰرِبُونَ شُرۡبَ ٱلۡهِيمِ
drinking like thirsty camels do.”
56 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 056
هَٰذَا نُزُلُهُمۡ يَوۡمَ ٱلدِّينِ
This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment.
57 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 057
نَحۡنُ خَلَقۡنَٰكُمۡ فَلَوۡلَا تُصَدِّقُونَ
It is We Who created you; why do you not then believe [in resurrection]?
58 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 058
أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تُمۡنُونَ
Have you thought about the semen that you emit?
59 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 059
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَخۡلُقُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡخَٰلِقُونَ
Is it you who create it, or is it We Who are the Creators?
60 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 060
نَحۡنُ قَدَّرۡنَا بَيۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ وَمَا نَحۡنُ بِمَسۡبُوقِينَ
We have ordained death among you, and nothing can overcome us
61 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 061
عَلَىٰٓ أَن نُّبَدِّلَ أَمۡثَٰلَكُمۡ وَنُنشِئَكُمۡ فِي مَا لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ
from transforming you and recreating you in forms that you do not know[7].
[7] Or "from replacing you by others like yourselves [in this life] and creating you [in the Hereafter] in that which you do not know."
62 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 062
وَلَقَدۡ عَلِمۡتُمُ ٱلنَّشۡأَةَ ٱلۡأُولَىٰ فَلَوۡلَا تَذَكَّرُونَ
You are well aware of the first creation; why do you not then take heed?
63 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 063
أَفَرَءَيۡتُم مَّا تَحۡرُثُونَ
Have you thought about what you sow?
64 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 064
ءَأَنتُمۡ تَزۡرَعُونَهُۥٓ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلزَّـٰرِعُونَ
Is it you who cause it to grow, or is it We Who make it grow?
65 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 065
لَوۡ نَشَآءُ لَجَعَلۡنَٰهُ حُطَٰمٗا فَظَلۡتُمۡ تَفَكَّهُونَ
If We willed, We could reduce your harvest to rubble, leaving you to wonder and lament,
66 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 066
إِنَّا لَمُغۡرَمُونَ
“We suffered loss,
67 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 067
بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ
rather, we are deprived.”
68 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 068
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلۡمَآءَ ٱلَّذِي تَشۡرَبُونَ
Have you thought about the water that you drink?
69 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 069
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنزَلۡتُمُوهُ مِنَ ٱلۡمُزۡنِ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنزِلُونَ
Is it you who bring it down from the clouds, or is it We Who bring it down?
70 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 070
لَوۡ نَشَآءُ جَعَلۡنَٰهُ أُجَاجٗا فَلَوۡلَا تَشۡكُرُونَ
If We willed, We could make it salty; will you not then give thanks?
71 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 071
أَفَرَءَيۡتُمُ ٱلنَّارَ ٱلَّتِي تُورُونَ
Have you thought about the fire that you kindle?
72 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 072
ءَأَنتُمۡ أَنشَأۡتُمۡ شَجَرَتَهَآ أَمۡ نَحۡنُ ٱلۡمُنشِـُٔونَ
Is it you who produced its trees[8], or is it We Who produced it?
[8] Referring to Arabian trees, markh and ‘afār, which produce fire when their green branches are rubbed against each other.
73 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 073
نَحۡنُ جَعَلۡنَٰهَا تَذۡكِرَةٗ وَمَتَٰعٗا لِّلۡمُقۡوِينَ
We made it a reminder [of the Hellfire] and a benefit for the travelers[9].
[9] By which they ignite fire. Travelers are mentioned in particular because it is of special convenience to them, although it is of use for all people in general.
74 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 074
فَسَبِّحۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلۡعَظِيمِ
So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Most Great.
75 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 075
۞فَلَآ أُقۡسِمُ بِمَوَٰقِعِ ٱلنُّجُومِ
I do swear[10] by the positions of the stars –
[10] The negative article "la" (nay) means: The truth is not what is said or thought by disbelievers or others. The oath refutes certain objections of the disbelievers with regard to the Qur’an.
76 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 076
وَإِنَّهُۥ لَقَسَمٞ لَّوۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ عَظِيمٌ
and this is indeed a great oath, if only you knew –
77 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 077
إِنَّهُۥ لَقُرۡءَانٞ كَرِيمٞ
that this is indeed a noble Qur’an,
78 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 078
فِي كِتَٰبٖ مَّكۡنُونٖ
in a well-preserved Record[11],
[11] i.e., the Preserved Tablet.
79 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 079
لَّا يَمَسُّهُۥٓ إِلَّا ٱلۡمُطَهَّرُونَ
that none can touch except the purified ones[12] –
[12] i.e., angels. It refutes the claim of the pagans that the Qur’an was sent down by devils. (See 26:210-212). Based on this verse, many Muslim jurists held that one should perform ablution prior to reading the Qur’an.
80 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 080
تَنزِيلٞ مِّن رَّبِّ ٱلۡعَٰلَمِينَ
a revelation from the Lord of the worlds.
81 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 081
أَفَبِهَٰذَا ٱلۡحَدِيثِ أَنتُم مُّدۡهِنُونَ
Do you take this discourse lightly,
82 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 082
وَتَجۡعَلُونَ رِزۡقَكُمۡ أَنَّكُمۡ تُكَذِّبُونَ
and instead [of thanking Allah] for the provision you are given, you show ingratitude?
83 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 083
فَلَوۡلَآ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ ٱلۡحُلۡقُومَ
Then why [are you helpless] when the soul reaches the throat,
84 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 084
وَأَنتُمۡ حِينَئِذٖ تَنظُرُونَ
while you are looking on,
85 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 085
وَنَحۡنُ أَقۡرَبُ إِلَيۡهِ مِنكُمۡ وَلَٰكِن لَّا تُبۡصِرُونَ
when We are closer[13] to him than you, but you do not see?
[13] We are closer to him in terms of Knowledge and Power; Our angels are closer in person.
86 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 086
فَلَوۡلَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ غَيۡرَ مَدِينِينَ
If you are not subject to retribution, then why do you not
87 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 087
تَرۡجِعُونَهَآ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ
bring that [soul] back, if you are truthful?
88 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 088
فَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُقَرَّبِينَ
If that dying person is one of those who will be brought near to Allah,
89 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 089
فَرَوۡحٞ وَرَيۡحَانٞ وَجَنَّتُ نَعِيمٖ
then [he will have] comfort, fragrance[14], and a Garden of Bliss.
[14] lit., fragrant basil. Paradise is described in the Qur’an as being pleasant to the eye, the heart, and the ear. Here it also emphasizes the scent.
90 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 090
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
If he is one of the people of the right,
91 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 091
فَسَلَٰمٞ لَّكَ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡيَمِينِ
[He will be told], “Peace be to you, for being one of the people of the right.”
92 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 092
وَأَمَّآ إِن كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ ٱلضَّآلِّينَ
But if he is one of the misguided deniers,
93 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 093
فَنُزُلٞ مِّنۡ حَمِيمٖ
then he will be welcomed with scalding water,
94 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 094
وَتَصۡلِيَةُ جَحِيمٍ
and he will burn in Blazing Fire.
95 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 095
إِنَّ هَٰذَا لَهُوَ حَقُّ ٱلۡيَقِينِ
This is indeed the absolute truth.
96 - Al-Waqi'ah (The Inevitable) - 096
